I thought that iSync 2.4 might solve my E61 number format problem...

...but, alas, it did not. Do any of you have this problem?

In my phone's contacts, a typical number looks like this: 8085551212...no parentheses, no hyphens, nothing. It makes reading the number very difficult. Might it be because my E61 was not made to play nicely with American phone numbers? It's quite frustrating.

Also, has anyone been able to sync your phone via USB? I don't even know how that's possible.

I love this phone, but I'm getting kind of tired of Nokia's lack of mac support. Are contact groups too much to ask for?

I sync with a mac just fine. Make sure you reset sync history and try again. My phone preserves all the number formatting and pics.

there is no usb support, so you are limited to bluetooth. I personally prefer bluetooth.

No dice. I reset the E61 in iSync, but it didn't change the number format. I synced my 6682 (just for kicks) and it preserved the proper number formatting.

Regarding he USB sync: Apple's new iSync device list says that a bunch of the new E and N series phones can be synced via bluetooth or USB. I always use bluetooth, but I tried the USB thing out of curiosity. Again, no dice...

i JUST updated the OS. I also saw the new device functionality. My N80 Syncs via USB just fine. i guess you could try to go into the settings in isync and try to completely erase the device and then resync. try finding out at www.macosxhints.com. their search might come up with something.

I tried resetting the sync history and removing the device (and adding it again), but it still won't format my phone numbers properly.

I didn't find anything on macosxhints that had to do with the number formatting problem.

Thanks though.

Here is the solution.
Unfortunately, for most newer Nokia phones this is set to be default. Probably, because you cannot add "-" or "()" characters on the phone when you add phone numbers. Anyway, here are the steps to set this for E61. Modify paths for your specific phone. Oh, and this is for 10.4.9, if you have earlier OS with 3-rd party plugins, you need to find plugins and modify them.
1. find iSync.app in your /Application directory.
2. right click and select "Show Package Contents"
3. navigate to Contents, Plugins, ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice, Contents, Plugins, "YOUR PHONE MODEL".phoneplugin, Contents, Resources
4. in there find file called PhoneConduit.plist and open it. If you have Developer Tools installed it will open in plist editor, otherwise, you'll need to open it with text editor capable to edit XML files.
5. In the file find key called "com.apple.contacts.Phone Number"
6. In that key, under "value" section, find subkey "charsToKeep" and edit it's string value to contain the characters that you want to keep.
7. Save file
8. Reset phone in iSync.

Mine "charsToKeep" is set for 0123456789+#*pw()-

Seems to work just fine.
Try it.

So you Mac users complain of compatibility issues? That solution is easier than in PC boxes, in which you have to actually BUY extra software!

Just kidding, but seriously, Nokia should let us add whatever characters we like to the phone numbers (oops, is that a contradiction?) we add. I have both an N-80 and an E-71 (both unbranded, and localized to Brazilian Portuguese) and neither lets us use hyphens or parentheses. I *heard* that the Cingular-Branded E-62 lets you use spacers (commas, parentheses, hyphens) and letters (vanity-phones), so it is easily done. And here in Brazil we have eight-digit phone numbers, plus area code, plus operator code AND country code. That's easily a 14-digit phone number.

Anyway, on the PC side you can insert spacers with Oxygen Phone Manager for Symbian, which is a *great* piece of software, very powerful, albeit sometimes not that user-friendly.

It's pretty ridiculous that you can't add the characters on the phone, right? Very lame...

Now that my problem is fixed, as long as I add the person's number to the mac's Address Book (instead of the phone), the formatting thing is not an issue. If I add someone to the phone, then sync it with the mac, I have to erase the number in Address Book, type it in, then sync, and it ends up correct in the phone.

All this would be a non-issue if I could just use those symbols in the phone like bspline said...
