I saved a hamster yesterday from a bad situation. Not what I had went to get but I felt sorry for her : ( tiny cage, big syrian hamster. Had a metal wheel that she had to bend herself in half to even fit in (dwarf hamster wheel) and the metal rod that held the wheel on the stand dug in her back every time she tried to run : ( I am a bleeding heart but anyways now that you have some back ground here is the problem. She has what appears to be a bite mark on her check and she is grooming herself excessively. I have another hamster in a separate cage and he grooms himself but nothing like this. She does have some hair loss down her back but I don't see fleas or anything like that. I don't know what it could be or what to do. She feels like she may have some small crusty areas on her back. I don't know what type of bedding that she was on but she is now in a large rat cage on an aspen/ care-fresh mixture. I am hoping that she is just having a reaction to there bedding that they had her on but I just don't know. It seems the only time she isn't grooming herself is in her wheel when shes running or when she is sleeping. She also is sliding on her side in the cage and rubbing her stomach on the ground, I am just clueless. Could she be pregenant and in labor or something?
Thanks for every ones help. I really appreciate it.
Last night was her first night with me but she also did something really weird she moved almost all of her bedding to one side of the cage. Maybe that helps? I just thought that it was weird because I have never had a hamster do this.
