i had to drop 9 hours last semester because my wife lost a baby and almost lost her mind. i had to stay home and take care of the child we already have. is this something that they would forgive and allow me to access financial aid again?

Probably. When you write your appeal letter, include copies of a few medical records to show you're not making it up.
