I staked my palm with a shard of glass! Will it heal without surgery?

Okay, so... I shoved my hand into a shard of glass, and it went nearly an inch into my palm. Specifically, about two inches below the space between my index and middle fingers. The glass penetrated at maybe a 32 degree angle, and left a wound about half an inch wide (again, approximately one inch deep). I was able to stop the bleeding pretty quickly, and the cut seems to be healing since I first wrapped and sterilized it, but there is what appears to be a small bubble of flesh protruding from the cut. The area is still swollen, and it feels really tense when I tighten my hand in any way. "Thumbs-up" hurts. Spreading all of my fingers apart hurts. It hurts less to press near the wound than it does when I clench. Actually, I just pressed near the cut and it started bleeding again. I can move all of my fingers, but it hurts the most when I bend my index and especially my thumb. Could I have damaged any tendons? I was really hoping to avoid seeing a doctor, but I will if I absolutely have to. It's pretty swollen near the wound. It only oozes blood when I apply too much pressure. Don't just say, "See a doctor." I really want someone to address my questions realistically. Maybe someone that has an understanding of anatomy... Please answer quickly. It's been 4-5 hours since this happened. If someone really wants to assess the damage in detail, I can take a picture of it and have it uploaded. Thanks in advance.
After researching the anatomy of hands, if anything, I may have damaged a nerve, and the muscle surrounding it. Will this heal on its own with TLC, or am I a fool - too tough for my own good?
