For some reason, my computer has been acting very strange. If I have a folder with some files it on my hard drive or usb, the Properties window says in the read only check box that only the files in the folder are read only (it has the solid box). But when I check the files in the folder, it says that none of them are read only! And if I go back to the folder's properties, uncheck the read-only, and click apply or select "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files" (the other option is grayed out), the "Applying Attributes" window will pop up and appear to do something. But if I close the Properties window and reopen it, it still says in the read only check box that only the files in the folder are read only! And like before, none of the files inside it are read only.
This problem also seems to be contagious; if I plug a usb without the problem into my computer, it immediately gets the problem too. And if I plug that usb into a computer without the problem, that computer gets the problem too! (Because of this, all the computers in my house have been infected)
I have tried many things to solve this problem; I have defragmented my disk, I've run CHKDSK, and used a partedmagic liveCD to check my disk, but none of them solved my problem. This has led me to believe that I have a bootsector virus. It makes sense- it can start the second you plug your USB in. But I can't use an MS-DOS startup disk to repair it because I run a duel-boot system with Windows Vista and Ubuntu and using the startup disk would kill the grub menu D:. And even then, it may not even be a bootsector virus.
So, can anyone help me get rid of this problem?
Note: Yes, I have antivirus (Norton 360), and so does every other computer that got infected.
