I saw a star moving in the sky. How did this happen?

At night, around 9pm, we were outside talking and I saw this star moving. It was only moving in one direction, North-East. It was really high up, and it was moving pretty quick. I'm sure it wasn't a plane, planes make sounds and the star wasnt flashing. How is this caused?
 
It sounds like the common description of a satellite.

Depending on your latitude, 9 P.M. might be a little late? Are you in the southern hemisphere by any chance?
