Buy some CDs by the following:

Bands: Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Duke Ellington
Composers: Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Gershwin
Singers: Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday

Good luck, and happy listening!

Well the 1930's cosisted of mostly hot jazz dance music, and not really lounge music. I think you're thinking of late 40's/early 50's blues and jazz which continued into the 60's with Sinatra and the Rat Pack.

Some of the originaters of that style of music:

(girls)
Ella Fitzgerald
Billy Holiday
Etta James
Peggy Lee

(guys)
Frank Sinatra (started with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra)
Dean Martin
Sammy Davis Jr.
Tony Bennett
Nat King Cole

Some Modern singers with that same kind of feel:

(girls)
Nina Simone
Diana Krawl
Barbara Morrison (personal favorite)
Maxine Sullivan
Madeleine Peyroux
Renee Olsted

(guys)
Micheal Buble
Harry Connick Jr.
Johnny Boyd (look up his solo CD and anything by Indigo Swing)

I would like to add, however, that even though lounge wasn't popular in the 30's, a lot of the great blues/jazz ballads were composed in the 30's.

Look up some songs composed by Gerswin or Cole Porter (like Love for Sale).

I hope that helps!
