I ran into a guy today.

So here I was, driving home from work. The roads were a skating rink, and I was going about 30 km/h (20ish mph).

About half way home, I was on a straight stretch of road with a few cars in front of me. The driver of the car that was 4 cars in front of me hit his brakes for whatever reason, the driver of the car behind him hit her brakes, the driver in front of me hit his brakes, hit the car that was in front of him. I was a little ways back, driving very slow, and I saw all this shit transpire.

So, naturally, I apply pressure to my brakes. Not too much, not too little. But, as I said before, the road was a sheet of ice. And so I hit the back of the car in front of me (Toyota Paseo, I drive an old Celica), and knocked off his bumper and tail light.

He didn't cause damage to the that he hit, and there was little damage done to his car from that impact. All damage done to his car was from me. I suffered a dented bumper and a broken turn signal. They guy who was in the car that I hit was a little shaken up, but otherwise alright.

And, here, the rule is if you hit somebody from behind, no matter what, it's your fault.

Life can be a bitch sometimes.

If I remember correctly, on the autobahns in Germany, if you're in the left lane (the fast lane) and you get hit from behind then you failed to yield the right of way and it's your fault. They take the concept of fast lane versus slow lane very seriously over there.

Typical huh? She may have inadvertently caused the accident, but you get screwed, and you didn't even bump her. Man I feel for ya, and I hope your insurance covers it no questions asked.

When traffic backs up on major artery, they have nasty pile ups with staggering casualty counts. Fortunately, they have a lot fewer wrecks over there.

I've heard of that rule, that when you hit somebody from behind it's always your fault.. kinda bullshit if you ask me. But I guess it's a good way to teach someone to stop riding peoples asses all the damn time.:happysad:

That sucks Unfa. Sorry to hear that man.

Did you by any chance tap your brakes as opposed to just pushing on them? That could've helped.

Well, Sounds like some body damage and a few bulbs, not a bad accedent in my book. Glad your ok.

Zoe, I think your missing his point, he was on ice.

As for the autoban, I have heard that it can go for a year without a pile up. I know that over there, a drivers licence to own a car to them is what it would take for us to drive in nascar. They don't fuck around with driving.

No I'm not missing the point. I'm just merely stating that downshifting makes your tires bog down and grab with the pressure of a downshift. Braking only helps you keep skating on ice.

If I were to down shift at any speed, on any traction redusing surface, I would loss control faster than if I hit the brakes. If I'm driving 40mph, and downshift to 3rd on a hot sunny day, with out stepping on the gas, I squall the fuck outa my tires. No two cars drive the same.

No two cars drive the same but downshifting increases torque which in turn pushes all weight to the front OR backside of a vehicle causing the tires to give way and bog down. With front/rear-wheel drive, limited-slip, posi-trac, and 4WD the effects of downshifting on the ice are the same.

I'm sorry Unfa, that sucks. I have been in so many wrecks, I hate it.

last March (wow I can't believe that it's almost been a year) I was hit by an angry 40 year old mother of a middle schooler. And my car was totaled. The worst part is, it was my fault for 'obstructing the right of way' even though if the bitch wasn't speeding, she wouldn't have hit me.
