I put my pay as you go simcard into an Lg xenon on att and it didn't work. Why?

Me and my friend recently decided to try each others phone out. He has a contract phone (LG xenon) and i have an LG neon on a pay as you go plan. When i put my simcard in his phone it just kept saying that it was initializing but never worked. Does anybody know how to get around this?
