I purchased a blackberry off ebay can i put a prepaid phone card on it?

Ok, so I need to know how all of this works, my boyfriend doesnt have a phone so I bought one off of ebay, and its a verizon blackberry pearl, i was going to try a sim card with it, but i found out that is a international thing, and I cant add him to my verizon line, so can i put him on a prepaid, and if i can how do i get a number, and then keep adding minutes... thanks
