I plug a USB flash drive in the back of my TV to watch movies, and shows.?

How do I get subtitles on some of the shows I watch? When I watch them on my computer the subtitles are there but sometimes when watching shows on my TV the subtitles do not appear(not all the time). When i go into tools adding subtitles is no where to be found. Is it the software that has that creates this issue? If so, can i upgrade or fix it? Any information on this is thanks~
