So I've been going to Yosemite my entire life, been to the top of the falls half a dozen times, and I've always looked at Half-Dome and fantasizing about the day I get too look out over the valley from it. I've decided that this is the year that I'm going to make it to the top of that sucker. But I really don't know how grueling the hike is, or what kind of shape I am to do that in. I'm in no way overweight, in fact I'm rather underweight, and quite lacking in muscle. I quit smoking over a year ago, but I don't feel like my lungs are quite up to snuff yet...
So, basically what I'm asking is... Do you really have to be in impeccable shape in order to accomplish the hike? If so, how would you recommend I train for it? Do I need a guide, or can a person do it solo? And when do they open the trail for public use? Is it at a specific time? Or just when all the snow is gone?
I would love to hear from someone who's done the hike themselves, but any advice from experienced hikers would be appreciated.
