I ordered a Garmin Street pilot C340 which said that i came loaded with maps of US.....?

...Now why do you need a SD card ?
Well is the SD card only for updating the maps and POI from the computer to the unit or is there more to it? I'm going on a vacation and thats the reason why i ordered this GPS and i have not ordered an SD card. Do i need it immediately?? Please advise.
