i once read a fictional book a couple years back but cant remember name or author, help?

this book was about a village that had a test of strength or something like that if you where lucky the giant gods would pick u up and take u away. the gods where really like these big green triclopse (sp?) things that would use the humans as slaves. they lived in a big dome thing and the humans would have to wear these mega heavy helmets cause the air inside was toxic and the "gods" would work them until they where to weak to even walk. does anyone know what im talking about?? please help
