I noticed lately that when I push my palm down on a surface I get a sharp pain through my palm. What is this?

I can push my hand down on a hard surface or soft and it will happen. For example, today I was making my bed and pushed down on the mattress as I was gathering the sheets off of it and the sharp pain came in my palm. I Immediately had to lift my palm. It does not happen every single time, but every once in a while. More of my lower palm is where the most pain is.
