I need TV and computer help!?

I have a Dell studio laptop that has a HDMI port on it. I used to plug it in to a 47'' Vizio LCD HDTV and it would display my laptop on it just fine.. now i have a 32'' Sylvania LCD HDTV and when i plug in my laptop with a HDMI cord the screen says It dosent support my laptop... Is there anything i can do to make my laptop work on my new tv? The Vizio is a 1080p and the sylvania is a 1080i. The 32'' tv is a year older then the 47'' tv. All i want to do is plug my laptop into my tv with an HDMI cable and watch movies. I tried lowering my laptop to all of the resolutions it had but every time i pluged my laptop into my tv the tv said Not Supported Format....
