I Need to make my G1 better/Faster?

So my G1 battery was dying on me so i got a new one. Now my question is how can i make my G1 Faster. I want to put a better android firmware such as android 2 or higher. How can i do that? So basically i just want to make my G1 better in tech. since better android phones have arrived.
 
I have a G1 and it has tremendous limitations. You can root it and I believe move your apps to the SD card to give yourself more memory, but I think it's a losing battle. I'll be getting a Defy when they come out in about a week.
 
why whats wrong with G1? i am not intrested in G@ too much since G1 can do what i want which is texting,calling,facebook, and a little web surfing. i just need to know how to make it better
 
Take a look at this site, if you root your phone and put CyanMod you will have alot better phone. Ran it on both of G1's and run it on my Nexus One currently.

You can tether your laptop to your phone for free, it makes your phone faster and you can install froyo on the G1. There are so many more options with Cyanmod, it's probably the most used custom rom on any phone.
 
If that's all you want, it does that. Mine too. You don't need it to go faster for those functions. I am getting by more or less fine with my G1. But for my purposes it requires piling on apps to get basic functions such as bluetooth file transfer (must root for complete usage) and the ability to download and save ANY attachments, to work. BTW I still think Android is more a toy OS than a serious smartphone OS. The Defy offers three important things: (for me, anyway)

1) Much more memory so if I have to pile on apps I can.
2) Wifi calling.
3) I can beat it up mountain biking, snowboarding etc.

... otherwise I would get the Nokia N8.
