mazda 323? one of the cables is just plain black and then the other cables have a yellow line going down the middle. i tried the yellow to the positive and the other to the negative and it kinda crackled. is it okay for it to do that? what will happen if the cables get switched?

If you have a meter you can find out easily.

Else, take a look at this picture and see if it helps.
The negative is connected to ground and the positive is usually Red.

Most times Red is positive and Black is Negative, However some car manufactures or Auto shops will often times install black cables with out considering other people may be working on it. There should be markings on the battery to show Positive and Negative. Or + and -. look close they will be there.

suggest there should be markings on the battery. Additionally, follow the cables, the ground should go to the engine chassis and bolt there, and the positive should go to the starter or starter solenoid.
