i need to find out the name of an old childrens book...?

There was this book my kindergarten teacher used to read me so i gets its an older one (though im only 21 years old now). its about an old man who lived in the woods i think. he spun a glowing string or collected a string, and rolled it up until at the end of the book, the glowing string became the moon in the sky.
