I am some what new to the whole drawing thing. It has capture my interest. I have bought a few books. each one tells me to start a different way.

My question is: what would be a good starting point for a beginner such as my self? should i start with the anatomy book, or the manga basics book?

the manga book starts every thing out as shapes and tells you to visualize your character. the anatomy book shows me where every thing is and why its there, how it works etc...

any exercises or tips would be appreciated

DO NOT start with cartoons. Actually, don't start with people in general. Simple things first, bottles, cans, balls, gradually add complexity. If you want to draw people, sit in front of a mirror and draw yourself, or make friends and family sit still and draw them.

ha...theres that...OR you can try my way...

Get a picture off google or wherever...

Then TRACE it 2 times...
Then TRACE the TRACED drawing...
Now try and DRAW it forehand (without tracing)
Afterwards your ability to draw that picture will be better...

Now choose a different drawing and do the same thing...

After a couple days of practice...

Think of another drawing (IN YOUR HEAD) and try to draw it...
(keep it simple for now)

Now try again...

Now a third time...

Now that drawing should be better than the first time...

After some more practice you'll
be better at drawing mentally...

Now try for a harder picture...

And try to draw THAT a couple times...

After a week of drawing leisurly...

You should be better at drawing than when you started...
Now you must find out what you have problems with...

-hands
-faces
-anatomy (bodies)
-ect

Now you devote yourself to SOLVING these problems...

After a bit more time...

You should be able to draw without as many mistakes...

Past that...Try focusing on drawing things
you don't usually draw...

Past that...

-Drawings should be better
-Better understanding

Now you should be better at drawing...

Past this is PRACTICE

But once you've done what I've told you...
PRACTICE should just be drawing
and experimenting with different things...

So take my advice and I'll guarantee
your art will get WAY better...

After reading this...Just remember past this...
All you need to do now is hone your skills...

GOOD LUCK

You should start out with the basic one first not matter how fast you learn. Even if your name is Albert einstein, you still have to start from the easiest first. Anyways, decide of what type of drawing you would like to do. Do you like portrait, caricature, architecture, etc? Any drawing is basically a bunch of simple shape like: triangles, rectangles, square, etc.
If you like architecture, you might want to under the laws of perspective. One point, two points, three points, etc. Now, it's really hard to understand the four, five, and six points perspective. Check out this video, it's great if you want to understand perspective: http://youtube.com/watch?v=felys-u4nfk It's also very inportant to understand the art of shading. This video is nice for shading: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-LoiLSvfywo&feature=related
These are some website that have taught me about drawing:

DO KEEP IN MIND THAT PARIS WASN'T BUILT IN ONE NIGHT. IT TAKES PRATICE, PRATICE, PRATICE...TO ACHIEVE THE MASTER OF ANY ARTS! DO NOT GIVE UP. ALTOUGH YOU MIGHT WANT TO, JUST LIKE I DID, HOW EVER, ONE DAY YOU WILL PICK UP THAT PENCIL AGAIN, AND START DRAWING. IT'S ALREADY A GOOD START JUST TO LOOK FOR HELP. BREAK A PENCIL!!!
Edit: There's a lots of video on http://youtube.com that can help you to learn how to draw. Many artist don't take art class to creat their masterpiece, so why should you? It's nicer is you can take a class though. It wouldn't hurt you, and it might open your eyes into new type of arts: oil painting, sculpture, music, etc!!!
