There is a small photography studio in my area that opened up back in 2001. I recieved a phone call today from a woman looking for a photographer to take photos at her son's bar mitzvah. I said yes and I am suppose to call her tomorrow with the details. I'm not sure what to quote her. The small photo studio in my area charges $150 for the first hour and then $75 for each additional hour. They also charge $45 for 8x10's, $25 for 4x6 and 5x7's, and $10 for wallet prints. To recieve the photos on a CD is $5. I want to be competitive, so what should I charge? It would also cost me about $50 in gas just to drive out there. Should I charge for my travel expenses?

To start with, charge at least $50 if that's what it would really cost you in gas. And state this in your quote. Don't get required expenses
mixed with your fee.
Then charge her $50-$75/hr or a flat rate for the entire event. Then tell her she may purchase an album or prints at $15/ sheet. I would never for any reason charge only $5 for a cd unless it's after a minimum purchase or something. All prices stated are based on the presumption that you don't have a studio and are possible somewhere in the beginning phases of charging money for your work. If this is incorrect, or slightly incorrect, you may want to charge slightly more for your work. Everybody has a price!
