Dear Journal, May 17, 1870
Just last year the railroad network was completed. My father and 2 brothers can finally return home to Omaha, Nebraska; after being away for about 8 years. I have been trying to forget that they had ever left. If I don’t then I would just sit and cry. I haven’t seen them since my 14th birthday…I am now 16.
On May 6, 1867, my mother found out that she had an unknown disease…the doctors could not help her. They could only make it less painful. The one thing they would say was that she only had 3 days to live; but she lasted long enough to give me this journal. She told me to write down everything that she is missing while she is gone, so that maybe one day she can read it. Today, 3 years after we found out about this terrible disease she died.
I only wish that she could have held on long enough to see her husbands face once more.
