I need some advice on dog breeds:?

I'm looking to buy a dog, but I don't really know a lot about breeds.
Here are the criteria I'm after:
- Medium size
- Short coat
- Somewhat friendly
- Quite intelligent

Also, I'm after one which is able to fend for itself without being aggressive.
I live in the UK, so it would have to be suitable for that climate.

I am aware this is quite a lot of specific information, but any input is appreciated.
Thanks

I'd recommend a Staffy (Stafford Shire). I had one as a child growing up. They are medium size (come to about your knees). Short fur. VERY playful and friendly. They love people and other dogs (still make sure they are introduced to other dogs are people as puppies). Have heaps of energy and they have their lazy moment when they just want to sleep and snuggle up to you. They are an inside and outside dog. Mine needed lots of attention, i dont think all would be the same, depends how you bring them up. They are stubborn and can get board, so get lots of toys!!!
They learn quite easy to, teaching them tricks is pretty easy but they can get distracted but will learn it soon enough. Teaching them right from wrong will be easy to as long as you teach them properly (like you would have to do with any other dog) but they will be one the the easer breeds to teach.
by fend for its self with out being aggressive, do you mean that it will be in the yard by itself a lot? or do you live with other people and they do not want anything to do with it? if its in the yard, give it a of toys and get it used to people and other animals and it shouldnt be aggressive. same goes for living with other people and aslong as your giving it the attention it needs it shouldnt matter that the other people want nothing to do with it.
hope i helped.

Get a boxer. It fulfills all your criteria given plus it's playful. Get a female one so it wouldn't grow so big. It craves for human attention and will always be there for you during bored times. Boxers love people and is also suitable for children as well.

Not enough specific information for me. What you really need to do is go to a dog show. There are quite a few in the UK. This way you can see the dogs up close and can talk to the people who own breed and show them. We're just a bunch of internet flunkies who don't even know you. The four points of your criteria need to be further defined. Is medium size 20-35#; 40-55#. And the somewhat friendly and quite intelligent parts are things that only you can define. The only true know is short coat.

:) I have different ideas of a medium dog to what you might, I think labradors are medium and according to charts they're classed as big :/ anyways get a greyhound, please think about it. They have short fine hair, they don't shed much so that's not an issue, they're very loyal and are so gentle. About fending for themselves, a dog is your responsibility so they don't really need to fend for themselves if you keep them away from threatening dogs.
