I need help with VLC, and possibly Windows Media Players?

I'm trying to play a DVD on my VLC player, but nothing's happening. Sometimes the DVD title shows up at the bottom and the timer starts running, but there is no sound or picture. It was working before, but now it doesen't. Could this be because I updated? The same thing goes for WMP, except there is picture and everything, but no sound, and yes, I do have the sound system on, lol.
