i need help with the four wheel drive on my 1988 chevy scottsdale?

i understand how to shift the transfer case and all that but my problem occurs because i have a knob that is attached to a cable that runs down to my front axle. depending on if it is pushed in or pulled out the lights on the transfer case turn on or off. no matter what i try it wont go into four wheel drive. can anyone add some insite
