help! I have just moved into New jersey and into a nice house with a nice big backyard. However, we met the neighbor today towards the back of the lot, who told us that a 'paper' road runs through our back yard and that we can have 20 ft into it and he can extend his boundary 20 ft into it - towards our house. He did the measurements and moved his boundary - TODAY - so that over half of what we thought was out backyard has now gone!! Is this legal? The previous owners of the house used the space as their backyard for 24 years without problem. Now the new owners (us) lose it in a day... I feel as if we have just lost a major piece of land just by talking to my neighbor. Please advise - we are feeling devastated.
