I need help with getting sound from my TV when i connect my laptop to it?

I recently bought a 3.5mm stereo cable with red and white ends. I plugged everything right but still the sound isn't coming from my TV. How to fix this problem?
 
Wherever those wires are hooked up see if says something like input or video 1,2,or 3 somewhere near the connection. If it does grab ur remote and look for input or tv/video on remote and click it till u match it with video or input 1,2,3
