I need help with freshwater fish?

I am considering starting a tank of freshwater fish. I definitely want guppies, but what else can I keep in there? I want a really colorful tank of lively fish. I have seen tanks where tank mates eat each other. I don't want this happening in my tank.

Depends on what size tank it is. With guppies, you want to stay away from bettas, gouramis, barbs, and danios...each of which can be fin nippers. Other than that, stick to the community fish. Mollies, platies, tetras, swordtails, corydoras catfish, otocinclus (type of algae eater), etc....all good fish.

What size aquarium are you thinking about? It is easier to recommend fish if I know how much room they will have. Since it is your first tank, I suggest getting the biggest one you can afford - it is easier to keep bigger tanks because the water quality stays more constant.

How about a siamese fighting fish, they are very colorful and have great personality. You can have tankmates too! They go well with platies, mollies, small loaches, shrimp and the african dwarf frog. I recommend at least a 10 gallon if you want tankmates.

How big is your tank?
A good rule to remember is "an inch of fish per gallon"
so make sure you know how big each fish is going to be.
So if you get a 10 gallon tank you can have 10 one inch fish.
To avoid fish eating each other look for "community fish"
if you go to petsmart they usually have the community fish labeled.
Those fish get along with most other fish.
