When its debt gets too high is it possible for the U.S. government to go bankrupt?
 
For the US government probably not. The US is lucky that most of its debts are denominated in US currency so they can just print more money and inflate the debt away. It would cause some pretty bad price instability though. Countries with debts in Foreign currency denomination would be a different story.
