I need help with a tmobile g1?

i got my friends g1 so i reset the phone to factory settings now i have my tmobile sim card in the phone from my tmobile sidekick i never had internet so i put my email and everything in the g1 and it keeps saying i need internet to use the phone can someone please help with getting away with this whole internet thing please help
