I need help to troubleshoot my 1996 Harley Davidson 1200 Sportster speedometer.?

The speedometer doesn't work on my 96' 1200 Sportster but the electronic odometer read out and the back light still work fine. First thing I did was take out the Mag Pick-Up from the case and clean it of the metal shavings that were on it. Ran it and still no dice. I need to get the voltage and resistance numbers so I can troubleshoot with a multimeter. I don't want to just start throwing parts at it until it works so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If the wires from the pick up to the gauge are in tact and the speedo doesn't work, the speedo is bad.

I don't have the literature with me at home for your bike, but I have the troubleshooting flowchart from my 99 Buell, the speedos are almost identical, the same troubleshooting SHOULD apply. You can try it and see if it helps, although, for some of the check, there is a special speedo daignostics tester required that mainly HD dealerships only will have.
