i need help setting up my linksys wireless router wrt54g v4 PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!?

alright so my dad gave me a wireless router that he has used before. its in pretty good shape as it has only been used once before. but this is where my problem starts i took it home to my computer and put the cd in and started installation. but, i plug the internet in and connect the router to the pc but the internet connection does not work through the router. is there something i need to do to change this?!?! oh and 1 more thing in about te 5th step of the cd when its trying to get the internet settings from my computer it says error when send how can i fix this? btw my isp is verizon dsl
