I read a book as a child that involved time travel. It was along the same kind of lines as The Phantom Tollbooth, sorta. It was a children's/teen novel, and I believe the author was fairly prolific, the genre would probably be horror fantasy. It was very dark, and if I recall had some illustrations in it. I think the author wrote several other stories either that went with this one or were just in the same horror genre. I remember the main character was a child, and him and one or two others, adults I think, find a time machine in*a*missing neighbors basement (which was in an abandoned subway line?) and they travel back in time. Back in time, they meet the missing neighbor, who had been there for quite some time. They also end up floating on a boat through an aqueduct underneath a city, where some sort of guardian being *has them answer historical questions or riddles to let them pass, to know they're not trying to poison the water supply. I believe they were in Rome then but nor really sure. And they end up in Turkey or something before some battle where they know a bunch of people in a church will*be massacred but they realize they can't do anything for the risk of changing history.
Anyway, I'm hoping that all was from the same book, and that someone on here has read it as well and can help me out as to the author or title :)
Thanks!
