I need help figuring out what book this is...?

OK. I read this book in junior high and lately I've been on a reminiscent book trek and re-reading everything.Unfortately, while I can picture exacty where it was on the shelf... I have n idea what it was called. It was about a small island community where the women where able to communiate with the dolphins, in fact it was a requirment. It focused on one girl's life, her befriending a dolphin, her punishment for pretnding to lose the gift and basically a moral story. The book itself was a light pink/purple or lavander and I'm pretty sure that it started with a 'P'. Any help would be appreciated, however, it is not The Island of the Dolphins but that is a good book as well if you wanted to check it out!! Thanks for any help!
 
i was going to suggest it be the dolphins of pern but they weren't required to befriend them, so i guess i am not that helpful.
