If you're aiming for realism, you'll need references. Unless you've drawn something a bazillion times and know it like the back of your hand (actually, even that's quite difficult without look at xD). It's difficult/impossible to draw things from memory which you don't take to notice.
And now references are so easy to find. The internet is an excellent source for that, and libraries are full of resource books with colored, large print pictures.
