I need Exercise help?

So, I want to start a new exercise ritual...but im not too sure how to plan it out. I have a few questions...
1. Would taking things slow and picking up gradually be more effective and cause better results than just jumping head into things (aka, long bike rides, massive amounts of pushups a day, etc.)
2. If I do situps all day, will it do much more than say 20 a day...I want to know how to get the best results for doing things such as push ups sit ups, jogging, etc...Im looking to tone my muscle...
3. what period of time is good for cardio on a bike, and then jogging/walking..

Any help with these questions is greatly appreciated, im really looking forward to getting in shape and doing my best :)
