Hero.
What is a hero?
Are there heroes in America?
Who are the heroes of today’s America?
In preparing for my speech, these were the questions that I asked myself. The more I thought about them, the clearer the answers became. Felix Adler once said “A hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by.”
Who are the people in America that light the blazing torches for the rest of us?
The first that comes to mind is President Barack Obama, a man who’s lit torches in many people in America. He has lit up a street that gave many people the opportunity to achieve goals that were previously thought to be impossible. Barack Obama is an American hero.
My parents, these are people who have worked their whole lives in order to light torches and provide my sister and I, a full, protected, and comfortable life. If it were not for my parents I would not be the man I am today. My parents encourage my sister and I, to be all that we can, and shoot for the stars. My parents are American heroes.
Troops and veterans, without these “torch-lighters”, the present and future of America would not exist. These people are the most important heroes because they put there lives on the line to protect everyone. They portray exactly what an American is. They not only lit the way, but paved the way for everyone and everything in America that we hold dear today. Troops, veterans, these people are the physical depiction of the word hero. Our troops are heroes. Veterans are heroes.
One person who has lit up a dark street in my life is a previous teacher of mine. A teacher who, in his life, has helped thousands of students. He taught so many students so many things. Things that don’t only help you in the classroom, but in your life as a whole.
Fred Weeks was my eighth grade history teacher. Not only is he a teacher, but a Vietnam veteran as well. Mr. Weeks is one of the best people I have, or will ever meet. He’s gone from protecting his country, to serving in classrooms. Mr. Weeks is an American hero.
John Adams, Clara Barton, George Washington, Patrick Henry, Rosa Parks, Abraham Lincoln. Heroes of America, from the past. The people who have been recognized as amazing heroes. The people who everyone knows as the heroes of our country; Barack Obama, my parents, Fred Weeks, soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen, coasties, and veterans. Some of the lesser-known heroes of today. People who live their lives in order that every man, woman, and child may be able to follow their dreams. These, are mine and America’s heroes.
Hero.
What is a hero? Someone who does whatever they can to create a better future for others.
Are there heroes in America? Of course there are, look for someone who does great things. You are bound to find someone you know who is a hero.
Who are the heroes of today’s America? American heroes are those mothers, fathers, teachers, troops, and veterans who can create a better world for everyone. I challenge you to find a hero in yourself.
