Ask them to create an animal hero and give it a name. It can be any kind of animal they'd like. Then, write about world from the animal's eyes, needs, instincts. This will force them to see it from a different perspective. They need to give as much detail as possible. Once they have described the world from the animal's viewpoint, ask them how they would go about making the world easier, kinder, more accepting, more accommodating, etc. for that animal. Once the changes have been made, have the animal discuss how the changes impacted and improved the quality of its life. I think by doing this writing exercise, they will generate many ideas regarding such things as safety, worth, power, importance, and making a change.

I work for an insurance company and I am developing an essay contest for local high school students. We want the essays to be about something with substance, meaning and possibly incorporating safety or driving safety. Maybe something about how to take the best care of themselves so they can be the best person they can be to impact the world and make it better. Challenge them somehow to understand their worth and power and how important they can be to making change. These are just some random ideas. I am continuing to rack my brain but if anyone is feeling creative and can think of a thoughtful idea please help : ). Thanks so much for any ideas.

Maybe this can be something to look into:

Contest-Go to 2040. Look into the future and tell me what you see. What have you done to make the world better? This question will stimulate the writer's thoughts. I would so write this.
