I am very concerned about the toxic potential of having mercury in my molar fillings. I know that I could use composite fillings, but I heard that they are not strong enough, and do not last long enough to be used as molar fillings.
In this day and age are there any safer alternatives to mercury fillings? I assume since they still use mercury, it must not be as harmful as I think it is. I have had mercury fillings in my mouth for 20 years now without any known problems. However, I am concerned about getting more.
Also, if there are alternatives, please let me know if there is a cost difference involved.
I am going to the dentist today to get a filling done. I never really discussed my options with them. It was kinda assumed that mercury is the way to go since they never said anything to me about what material was to be used. It was automatically written as amalgam filings on my treatment plan.
Any advice, comments and thoughts would be appreciated. I would also like to know what people would choose if they were in my situation. I am going to need a total of 9 cavities in all. However, 2 or 3 of them are replacing worn fillings that are 20 years old.
Thanks.
