Here are some of my favorites. Please read and tell me what you think. Oh and most are the first book in a series, so lots to read here and all worth reading.

"Alanna: The First Adventure" by Tamora Pierce

"Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld

"The Golden Compass" by Pullman

"The Host" by Meyer

"The Hunger Games" by Collins

"Goddess of the Night" by Lynne Ewing

"The Amulet of Samarkand" by Stroud

These are great books but will take more then 35 pages to get into. If your attention span is that short reading novels is not for you, go back to television.
