So don't get PO'd at me. I know absolutely nothing about phones, types of service, etc.

I ride a motorcycle all over the country, by myself, and don't have a phone. This summer I'll be doing a coast-to-coast and have due to the urging of friends/relatives have decided to look into having a mobile phone in case of emergency. I don't want to pay a monthly fee, would like just a pay-as-you-go service.

I know this is like teaching a baby to walk to most people who frequent this board, and so I apologize. Recommendations appreciated for a reasonably-priced, good coverage phone for a woman who rides in the boonies.

Thanks.

Well the first thing you need to do is pick a carrier. Since you are going coast to coast, my guess is its either Cingular or Verizon. I don't know about the coverage areas of the pay as you go services or if Cingular and Verizon have this option, but I do know that Cingular and Verizon have the best US coverage of anyone.

The other thing you need to do is look at your route and make sure the pay as you go carrier has coverage there.

However to be say, I would go for a real provider, rather than a pay as you go type.

Rely on your own resourcefulness as you have in the past. A folding red reflector behind your Bike will most likely get help from another "biker soul"..

Just curious... since she is a woman, she needs to go with 850mhz?

I would say go with Cingular Pay As you go w/ Unlimited m2m. It is .10/min and 1.00/day for each day you use it. For example... If you don't use it on thursday, nothing is charged. If on Friday, you do use it for 5 minutes, you are automatically charges 1.00$ and .50 cents for those mins. If you choose to use it again in the day, it will just be .10 as the 1.00 covers you from 12AM-12PM. Also if you call a Cingular customer, you are still charged the 1.00 cover charge, but not the per minute rate.

Thanks for the replies. Based on your recommendations, I'm looking at the Cing. Pay As You Go service, with a Motorola C139 dual-band phone. However the coverage map shows little in the southwest where I will be riding, and minimal coverage in northern Wisconsin where I often work.

Is this just the way things are, no getting around it?
