I just recently got some fish and they wont eat their food. What should I do?

I don't know what kind of fish they are. They are white,orange and red and their stomachs are sort of big. I asked a friend and she said they might just be waiting for it to float to the rocks so they can suck it off. But I have no idea.
Please help me with my fish!
