...is the check engine light on? My car quit last Monday afternoon and I had it towed to a garage that I have dealt with in the past. Since they were already going to be working on the car, I asked them to look at the brakes - - they were starting to squeal a bit and I expected I'd have to replace them. I also asked them to change the oil and filter.
They called me later and I told them to go ahead and replace the alternator, rotors and pads on all four wheels, two brake calipers, and change the oil/filter.
I picked up the car and as soon as I drove away I noticed the "check engine" light on and the engine idles really slow (almost stalling). I have since noticed that the brakes make a grinding sound/vibration when they are applied with low to medium pressure and the ABS light comes on.
I took the car to another shop yesterday to get a 2nd opinion. They cleared some errors from the computer but the check engine and ABS lights still come on.
Does anyone think they know what the problem(s) might be?
More info...
Oh....the shop that did all the work also replaced the battery.
Later this afternoon, I will be taking the car back to the shop that did the work.
I am wondering...because I lost all power to the car (it was completely dead...no hazzard lights..no power locks...nothing worked) would this damage the elctrical system/computer in any way? What about ABS sensors...would this damage them?
I worry that the whole electrical/computer system may be damaged.
Is that a possibility?
Thanks for all the answers so far...
I wish I knew why even the 2nd opinion did not completely solve the problem. I got the impression he thought the first shop didn't do the job correctly. He suggested that the check engine light and slow idle problem may have something to do with the fact that the car was completely without power(?). He said that the computer may have lost anything stored in the memory. He suggested driving the car for a couple days to see if the problem goes away(?).
He did say that he didn't think the original shop had anything to do with these two issues.
However, the brake problems and abs warning, in his opinion, may be poor workmanship from the first shop. I was already planning on taking it back to the original shop, but I was hoping to be more informed about what could cause these problems.
Any more information would be greatly appreciated...
