take him to the vet? This afternoon I had my 4 year old male and my 7 month old female fixed. We have been home for about 5 hours now- the female seems to be doing ok but the male is whining non-stop like he is in pain. He is usually a very mellow dog. The vet said that they would both be groggy and probably just come home and sleep it off. I am very worried. They injected them both with pain medication but didn't send me home with anything. This is breaking my heart- I hope I didn't make a huge mistake. WHAT SHOULD I DO??

He is probably in some pain, the meds are wearing off.The older the dog the harder it is on them.If he is still like that you should call your vet and get another couple of days pain meds for him.

If you have a husband or boyfriend, ask them what it would feel like if they were "fixed"! They will absolutely make sort of mortified face and cringe. The surgery is essential, but painful and each dog will respond to coming out of surgery a little differently.

It isn't unusual for a dog to whine, pace, or pant after any surgery as they are nervous (they know something happened) and in pain. Depending on the pain medication it may have worn off.

Do watch for any stitches popping open, make sure they aren't licking themselves or each other's wounds, bleeding, excessive redness or swelling, or any purple areas. Otherwise, keep a very very watchful eye and make sure they are both eating and drinking per your vet's instructions.

Congrats on being a very responsible dog parent and "fixing" them both!

If he is still groggy put him in a quite place and try not to mess with him too much. If they gave him a pain killer he should be ok for 24 hours. he is probably scared from waking up from the anestesia.
