I just bought a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2, why is it so loud?

I understand that it is ten years old, and it has 140,000 miles on it. But when i'm stopped, the engine gets really loud and the whole car shakes. What's causing this? Do i need to get new motor mounts?

Well who doesn't like loud cars, ummm change the engine muffler to make it quieter.
