I just bought a 1973 Honda CL350 Scrambler, I can't get it started...?

I don't know much about bikes but...the battery is dead,when I first bought it it started pretty well. Now I use the kick and can barely-none get it started. When it does start it will try to die if I give it gas or put it in first or take-off.Also when its in neutral and I give it some gas, if it actually decides to rev up instead of die it backfires a little, especially at higher rpms. Any ideas of whats wrong would be appreciated. Thanks
