Yesterday I hit a dog with my car. I cracked my bumper all the way across. Who's responsible for the damage?
The dog was running free and there's a leash law in Georgia. I live on a pubic street but it's a dead end and very narrow. Should I have to pay to fix my car or the owner of the dog? The dog didn't die...but his condition is really bad. I have never hit a dog and feel horrible about it and don't want to ask the owners to fix my car. PLUS I'm related to the owner....what should I do?
The dog has been hit by 2 other cars. The owner has been told to restrain the dog. He's a mixed breed dog that's huge!! I felt horrible and went told them I hit their dog...they replied by, "Good, maybe he'll quit chasing cars." The owner told me he's tried calling the pound but they won't come pick the dog up.

Yes, you should ask him to pay. It's his fault and therefore he is responsible for all of it. He put his dog in critical condition, not you. It was HIS carelessness that caused all of this. Therefore HIS money should be paying for it all.

You are not responsible for anything.

the owner of the dog is responsible for your car damages. you should have called the police to fill out a report. you most likely can still call them and file a report. the dog's owner should have had a leash.

well i don't think you should ask him to pay, espically since his love companion will most likley die. Would you ask them to pay for it if it was a child you hit?

Oh jezzz .. what a awful situation.

Generally, if a dog injures someone or something, or destroys something I think generally the dog owner should offer to pay for the repairs.

But the dog running loose is another thing. Did the owners know if the dog was loose? Does it usually run loose? I think if it is generally out - and they haven't really taken responsibility for their pet - then yes, they should contribute to repairs.

Although - you are related to them. Jezz - I really don't envy you here. How tricky.

I think it might be best to see how the dogs goes and recovers as the vet bills can be expensive. Once the dog has recovered it might then be a good idea to have a talk to the owners and see if they might be in a position to help you out with the car repairs. But I don't think I would push it if the become distressed.

In Australia, mostly everyone has comprehensive insurance on our cars - so this type of situation would almost always be covered.

i can understand the situation that your in as you are related to them. the point being is that the dog should not of been roaming about with out a leash as the law states, but i don't think that the owners will be responsible for the damage to your car,as they didn't actually cause the damage their dog did and obviously the dog can't pay lol.
the best thing to do is do alot of research into the laws in you area, if you find they are not buy law eligible to pay for the damage you will have to pay yourself.
good luck
