I have to start riding my bicycle to work....?

Avoiding the Highway I've got 2 routes to take, 10.5 miles and 11.5 miles. The latter of which gets me around the business district and avoids a large hill. How long should I have to leave ahead of time to make it to work on time and is not pushing the bike up the big hill worth an extra mile of biking? I have a 12 speed and half of the ride either way will allow me to use the higher gears.

1 mile difference is minimal. I'd choose the safest route. Not being paranoid, just that doing it every day, the odds will eventually catch up with you. Hills aren't much of a factor either way for me. If a car can get up the hill, so can I.

Time? You need to do some test runs to figure out what works for you. I know how fast I am, but even if I was doing it, it would take a couple of test rides to get a feel for traffic and terrain before I could commit to a realistic commute time. If you have to go for real right now without test rides, just leave REAL early the first couple times to be sure.
