I have to get out of here, who wants to go backpacking? Best place wins.?

Recession 2009 and never ending it seems. Not for a while at least. Might as well get out of here and pack up to a foreign place.
Who wants to go backpacking. Where would be a good place?
Don't be lame.
I'm thinking South America? or is that too overrated?
 
Do what I'm doing next winter, go on a trip to Russia by any means. Taking lifts, riding on the overnight trains staying in dodgy eastern european motels, gonna be SWEEET!

The only problem is the language barrier but that's all part of the fun.
 
My dream was to go to Japan and/or the Netherlands.

But thanks to the stinking recession, bye-bye Japan. Bye-bye Netherlands.

So I'm going to go with... Greece!
I've been wanting to see Athens forever.
