I have problems with my palm trees.?

I have twelve palm trees around my pool varying in height from 12' ~ 30' ( 400cm ~ 1000cm ). Six of them are right next to the pool ( saltwater pool) & 2 of them have what I describe as a scar approximately 2' (60cm ) up from the base & approximately 3' ( 100cm ) long. The scar is like a scooped out rotted section, very dry & crumbly. The other 4 palms in the same area do not have the scar, but you can see the outer bark of the area dimensions as already mentioned is cracked & dry & looking like they may go the same way. The affected area on all of the palms faces due west & exactly the same is reflected in each. I thought could it possibly be the effect coming from the pool, as the other 6 palms show no signs of this deterioration at all, but all of those 6 palms are 10' ( 300cm ) away from the pool. Also I thought could it simply be the affected palms are getting burned from the sun as they all are completely in the open & certainly get that westerly sun right until it drops out of the sky, whereas the other 6 palms are far more protected from the sun.
Does anyone have any idea what this might be & is there a cure?
Thanks for listening...Pete
I should have mentioned that I live in New South Wales, Australia.. not far from the beach.
